One, Florida State Senator Mike Fasano introduced S206. This bill -which failed to make it past committee - would have included domestic animals under the protection of domestic violence laws. You can read the legislation here: http://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2011/206 As you can see on our "Facts" page, the link between animal abuse and spousal/ child abuse is proven and undeniable. We thank and applaud Senator Fasano for his bold steps. I encourage you to contact him at email@example.com and express your support. Hopefully hearing from his constituents will reinforce his conviction to reintroduce this groundbreaking legislation.
Two, In Manatee County Florida, a new program has been instituted providing a Guardian Ad Litem to animal victims of cruelty. The GAL becomes the legal voice of the victim during the court proceedings. This revolutionary step takes animals from "things" to "beings" and provides a unique support to their case. While the AJRG can't take credit for these, it's more proof of a growing grass-roots effort to end cruelty. It's the kind of news that encourages me to keep fighting.
