As they say in crime investigations - follow the money.
On July 20, 2012 the AJRG got an anonymous phone call:
"I got an anonymous call this morning from a man who said ebro racetrack
hired another guy to "care" for the dogs. He drove dogs up from sarasota to
ebro and on the way, 2 of the dogs fell out of the trailer on hwy 75, and he
just left them. He said the guy is in trouble for that, but i dont know what
county that happned in. He also told me the dogs are being neglected. He said
the guy's name is James Watson and he lives in carryville, his license # for
what he does is 6958531. He also told me the man who owns ebro park name is
Stocky Heff. Im going to call animal control in washington county"
In light of this info, an AJRG member found this new article:
We contacted Karyn Zoldan, the article's author. She confimed the trailer was indeed going to Ebro: "The trainer called our adoption coordinator and we found out that Freeway was being hauled from Sarasota Kennel Club to Ebro Greyhound Park, got into a fight with a dog in his compartment, the hauler heard the commotion, started pulling over, somehow the latch on the compartment came open, and Freeway and a female greyhound tumbled onto I-75 at about 30mph at 4a.m on the morning of May 8th. The female greyhound was found, but after 1.5 hours of looking for Freeway, the hauler had to make the decision to keep moving toward Ebro as the truck was not air- conditioned and he had to keep in mind the lives and safety of all of the other dogs on the hauler"
We will continue to keep you posted about this incident. It is doubtful if any charges will be brought as it was an 'accident' but perhaps this will she
