Some people are cat people, and some people are dog people. Despite our preferences, most people who care about animal abuse or welfare are "animal" people.
But there are exceptions. Today I received an email about a cat that had been shot with an arrow, and died. I shared this incident via email with our group. I received a response so unexpected... I didn't know what to do. One member who has been consistently passionate and vocal in her crusade against abuse sent me a reply - stating how much she hates cats. She ranted about the problems outdoor cats cause, how cat owners shoved their pets into the neighborhood without regard for the animals or the neighbors, and how if she "never saw another cat again" she'd be happy.
After several hours of reflection, I reached out to her. I tried to reason with her, and tried to understand what was causing her hatred of cats while she held such love and respect for dogs. She only got more incensed.
Seriously- how can you be the staunch defender of one specie, and hold another on vile disdain? How can you have compassion for one and wish harm on another?
